Free asbestos disposal- can this be affordable to Councils throughout Australia?

We here at AMAA heard about this program and really want to see it organised in regions all over the country.

For residents, a free asbestos disposal program was run for 3 months until early January 2022, in the Wollongong, Shellharbour and Kiama areas of NSW.

Approximately 6 tonnes of asbestos material were collected from the 80 households that participated in the [program, which aimed to reduce illegal dumping of asbestos materials within the region.

Residents that were eligible in the area, were provided with free asbestos collection and disposal on non-friable asbestos lying around residential properties.

This project was funded by the NSW Environment Protection Authority through the waste levy and the cost for collection and disposal was $33,000. Mr James Vincent, the Illawarra Shoalhaven Joint Organisation (ISJO) said residents were uncertain about legal safe and economical options for the removal of asbestos.

The environmental and safety benefits were worth the expenditure as the program also worked on informing residents, Vincent believed.

We at AMAA will approach local councils within our region to see if a pilot program such as this can be made available.
