Caregiving and loss

The Adjustment After Caregiving

When a person suffering from an asbestos or silica related disease does pass away, the transition can be especially challenging for caregivers. Caregiving can become all-consuming. Daily schedules of diet, medications, home care, and medical appointments can often leave the caregiver with very little time for self care.

So, when this role suddenly ends, there can be an unexpected void.

It’s not just the loss of the person they devoted love and time to, but the loss of a ‘routine’ and being needed in a particular way. Grief can come in many forms and feelings of being unsettled, or lost is what we often hear from caregivers.

If you or any of your family members are suffering with grief please do not hesitate to contact AMAA on 1800 017 758.

The AMAA volunteers are always around for a conversation, but can also help with referrals to other bereaved caregivers, or to counsellors and invite you to join with others at an AMAA morning tea.
