Asbestos: Positive proposal for essential changes to the Rotterdam Convention May 2023
Years of working towards asbestos and related materials being banned from import or export, by many countries worldwide, has constantly failed due to the voting rules of the Rotterdam Convention.
Recently, interested countries are trying to change the voting rules so that substances like asbestos can be banned without a unanimous vote. Unfortunately still many parties worldwide are pro asbestos.
In Australia we have one of the highest rates of asbestos related disease in the world. It is estimated to kill 4000 Australians every year. That is more than our awful number of road deaths.
We all need to come together to get asbestos out of our homes and public spaces safely and dispose of it correctly to limit any more unnecessary illness and loss of lives.
